Environmental measures in our hotels

We offset emissions from certain activities through CO₂ removal projects registered with the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge’s Carbon Footprint, Offsetting and CO₂ Removal Projects Registry.

These include forest management and regeneration projects in Galicia, Spain, that absorb CO₂. 

Photovoltaic panels

We use photovoltaic panels to generate electricity from solar energy. The photovoltaic panels transform sunlight into electricity in a clean and efficient manner, supporting our commitment to sustainability and caring for the environment. 

Elimination of single-use plastics

We have introduced measures to eliminate single-use plastics and drive sustainability. We have replaced capsule coffee machines with ground coffee alternatives, and now use biodegradable or reusable straws instead of plastic ones. In our restaurants, we have replaced single portion items, such as jams, for loose produce. Furthermore, in the bathrooms, we now provide refillable shower gel and shampoo dispensers, significantly reducing our use of plastic packaging.

Combined treatments for swimming pools (Salt Electrolysis & Ozone)

Our pools are treated with an innovative and pioneering disinfection system that is much more sustainable, eco-friendly, and natural, as it produces no waste and does not cause allergies or irritation. This choice strengthens our commitment to the environment, offering a healthy and nature-friendly swimming experience by eliminating the use of chemicals such as chlorine. 

Carbon footprint calculation

Since 2017, we have calculated and registered our carbon footprint with Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. Since 2021, we have also verified our Scope 1 and 2 emissions in accordance with international GHG Protocol methodology. This analysis allows us to identify and reduce our emissions through effective actions. By monitoring and evaluating our activities, we can implement sustainable strategies that help protect the environment.

ECO Cleaning

At THB hotels, we are firm believers in more responsible tourism, which is why we have launched our Green Care Cleaning Plan. We use concentrated products and efficient dosing systems that help us significantly reduce single-use plastics without compromising effectiveness or safety when cleaning our hotels. 
Every small action counts, and with this initiative, we are minimising our environmental impact while continuing to take care of every detail of your stay. 

Locally sourced fruit and vegetables

Most of our fruits, greens and vegetable products come from a local supplier, thereby guaranteeing their origin and proximity. In addition, as part of our drive to reduce food waste, we also procure these products in pre-cut format in specific amounts. This enables us to offer our guests fresh, top quality produce, whilst also supporting the local economy, promoting the responsible use of the resources available and progressing towards net-zero waste.

Grey water

We apply sustainable water management practices, including the treatment and reuse of grey water. We employ a cutting-edge chemical process to filter and clean the grey waters, allowing them to be safely reused in WC systems. This initiative not only cuts potable water consumption, but also contributes to the conservation of hydric resources. 

Consumption monitoring and optimisation

We monitor, analyse, and optimise our consumption in order to minimise our impact on the environment. This is possible thanks to our implementation of state-of-the-art technologies and efficient practices to reduce the use of energy, water, and other resources. An approach that allows us to lower emissions and generate less waste, contributing to environmental protection.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Verification Statement

THB hotels reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and the principles of transparency in environmental management. We conduct an annual measurement and verification of our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, ensuring that the reported data provide a precise representation of our organisation’s carbon footprint.

Our annual statements are prepared in strict accordance with the GHG Protocol, the globally recognised benchmark for emissions accounting and reporting. To further guarantee the integrity and credibility of the process, the reported emissions have undergone independent verification by SGS. This verification has been performed to a limited assurance level, in full compliance with the scope, objectives, and assessment criteria defined under the UNE-EN ISO 14064-3:2019 standard.

Solar panels

We have installed solar panels to harness the sun's energy and cut our carbon emissions. This energy is used to heat water for human consumption. This clean, renewable energy enables us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, which in turn minimises our impact on the environment. Solar panels contribute significantly to sustainability by providing efficient and eco-friendly energy.

At THB hotels, we are committed to protecting the environment and promoting responsible practices. That’s why, in each of our hotels, you’ll find ECO-Friendly Corners – spaces purposefully designed to inspire and support sustainable actions during your stay.

Here, you’ll find practical tips on saving water, recycling, using energy responsibly and respecting natural and cultural heritage. You’ll also find a recycling area, where you can properly sort your waste and help contribute to more sustainable tourism.

Managing the collection of used vegetable oil

One of the ways we minimise our impact on the environment is the collection of used vegetable oils. This action is vital, because pouring oils down drains can contaminate water and damage ecosystems. By recycling vegetable oils, we prevent pollution and drive the circular economy, transforming waste into biofuels and other useful products.

Managing the collection of special and hazardous waste

We carry out the collection of hazardous and special waste to protect the environment and ensure everyone's safety. These types of waste, which include chemical products, batteries, and electronic devices, among others, require proper handling and disposal to prevent soil and water contamination. By managing these materials responsibly, we can prevent ecological damage and promote sustainable practices.

Geothermal energy

We use geothermal energy as part of our commitment to the environment. Geothermal energy harnesses the Earth's natural heat to regulate the temperature of our spaces, significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. This sustainable and efficient method helps decrease our environmental impact and promotes the use of clean energy sources. 

Locally sourced cocktails

As part of our commitment to serving authentic cocktails, we use locally sourced ingredients. We choose ingredients from local suppliers in the destinations where we operate, making the most of local and seasonal produce.

LOCALLY SOURCED AMENITIES FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE CARE

At THB hotels, we encourage more mindful personal care with our locally sourced amenities. Made with 100% natural ingredients, they are not tested on animals, and are produced through sustainable manufacturing processes. By sourcing them locally, we reduce transport-related emissions and support the local economy.

T'Estim organic infusions

We have introduced locally sourced tea from the T'Estim brand, a project set up by the Estel de Llevant Association for the production of organic teas and infusions in Mallorca. T'Estim products are 100% Mallorcan and organic farming certified. This project promotes mental health initiatives, creating job opportunities for people with mental health disorders through dual vocational training in gardening and agriculture. More than twenty people with mental health-related disabilities have benefited from this initiative. Every cup supports a noble and local cause.

Training in environmental awareness and waste management

In collaboration with Ibiza Council's Waste Office, we organise talks on “Environmental Awareness and Waste Management” for our employees to ensure they know how to handle the waste generated in our hotels correctly. During the talks, employees receive essential information and practical tips on how to improve the internal management of the waste generated. We actively promote actions designed to minimise our environmental impact and drive the entire team's commitment to sustainable practices.

SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS DAYS

This training action for employees is intended to promote authentic experiences for guests, enabling them to discover the destination and its culture. The information provided included details of how to behave when visiting natural areas, local communities and cultural or historic sites. Part of the training was to ensure that both employees and guests have easy access to this information, which is displayed publicly on the information totem in the hotel reception area. It features clear instructions and useful tips for ensuring a respectful and enriching stay.

BEACH EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE POINT

We provide a dedicated point where guests can leave and collect beach materials such as lilos, balls or sun umbrellas. This is our way of promoting their reuse, preventing unnecessary purchases and reducing the waste generated at the end of a holiday. A simple and collaborative way of caring for the environment while enjoying the sea.

RECYCLING POINTS AND WASTE SEPARATION

We urge our guests to take an active role in responsible waste management. For this reason, we have set up clearly visible and easily accessible recycling points in the communal areas of our hotels. These stations make it easier to separate materials such as plastic, paper, glass and packaging.

REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLES FOR STAFF

At THB hotels, we provide employees with reusable water bottles to encourage them to use fewer single-use plastics. This initiative – one of the many measures we’ve introduced to reduce our use of single-use products – replaces conventional plastic bottles with a reusable alternative.

“Vi de la Terra” designation local wine

We offer a list of local wines that hold the “Vi de la Terra” designation. This Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) guarantees the quality and authenticity of wines made with locally grown grapes. What's more, as part of our commitment to sustainability, all the glass bottles are returned to the supplier for reuse, thereby reducing the environmental impact and driving responsible practices. This way, our guests can enjoy the unique and authentic flavours of our land.

Awareness-raising workshops

We firmly believe in the importance of environmental education and ongoing training for our team, which is why our THB hotels corporate training plan includes visits to TIRME, enabling our workers to obtain a first-hand insight into the urban waste management system used on the island of Mallorca. A system based on reducing and recovering all waste products in order to guarantee a sustainable and circular destination. This experience raises awareness of the need for correct waste sorting and good environmental practices.

PROCESS DIGITALISATION

We use digital solutions to reduce paper consumption and make certain processes more efficient. From online check-ins to internal management, we are incorporating digital solutions that minimise unnecessary printing. This helps us cut waste and make better use of the resources available to us. 

ROOM ACCESS AND GUEST IDENTIFICATION

At THB hotels, we use a range of solutions for room access and guest identification. Our room access cards are currently made from recycled PVC. Some of our hotels also use wristbands with NFC technology, allowing guests to open their room doors easily and securely. The wristbands are made from recycled PET fabric and wood.

We encourage guests to return them at the end of their stay so they can be reused, keeping waste to a minimum. At other properties, we use the same recycled PET fabric wristbands to identify guests’ booked meal plans. 

REDUCED FLOW AND AERATION IN TAPS AND SHOWERS

At THB hotels, we work to optimise water consumption without compromising our guests’ comfort. All our taps and showers are fitted with flow-reduction systems and aerators that limit the amount of water used while maintaining the sensation of a generous flow. This enables us to guarantee more efficient water use, helping to save and protect this essential resource.

REUSABLE CUPS

In order to reduce the amount of single-use plastic, at THB hotels we provide reusable cups throughout our facilities. This initiative reduces waste and encourages guests and employees to use reusable options.

SUSTAINABLE REFRIGERANT SELECTION

At THB hotels, we prioritise the use of refrigerant gases with a low global warming potential in new equipment and when refilling existing systems. This measure reduces the environmental impact associated with air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, actively helping to decrease pollutant emissions.

PRINTED ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION

At THB hotels, we display printed information around our properties to help guests follow good environmental practices. In the rooms and communal areas, you will find messages encouraging guests to reduce their water and energy consumption, as well as to recycle and avoid the use of single-use plastics. This helps guests put these practices into action during their stay.

TOILETRIES IN REFILLABLE CONTAINERS

All our toiletry containers are recyclable and plastic-free. We also use refillable dispensers that reduce the need for individual containers. With these measures, we minimise waste generation and offer our guests a comfortable, responsible and environmentally respectful experience.

The “1 Song, 1 Shower” Movement

With the aim of saving water and promoting responsible habits, we have come up with a playlist featuring 4-minute songs, which, according to the WHO, is just how long a shower should last. We encourage our guests to listen to their favourite song as they shower, which will help them limit it to 4 minutes. This action can save up to 10 litres of water per minute, accumulating a significant amount over time and contributing to the conservation of this vital resource. .

LED LIGHTING

We use LED lighting in all our properties. LED lights use less electricity and last longer. This reduces the electricity used for lighting and helps cut the associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Water control and optimisation

We work hard to manage water both efficiently and responsibly through the introduction of advanced systems to control and optimise our water use. Ongoing monitoring and the introduction of innovative technologies allow us to guarantee the efficient and sustainable consumption of this essential resource. These practices enable us to cut water waste, minimise our environmental impact and guarantee the responsible management of all our operations. Our commitment to sustainable is reflected in every drop we use, thereby contributing to the conservation of natural resources.

BOXING DAY CHARITY CAMPAIGN: WE DONATE 5% OF OUR BOOKING REVENUE

Through our Boxing Day campaign, we donate 5% of the revenue from our bookings to projects that make a real and positive difference. In recent years, the campaign has enabled us to support the work of Tursiops, a research organisation dedicated to the conservation of the marine environment and cetaceans in the Mediterranean.

UNIFORMS MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS

Our hotel staff uniforms include garments made from recycled textiles. When choosing uniforms, we consider the materials, durability, practicality and comfort for our teams.

PURCHASING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA

At THB hotels, we select suppliers in each destination and, where possible, favour those that use reusable or recycled packaging, use less packaging or offer certain products in bulk. We include these criteria in our supplier selection and purchasing processes.

LOCAL WINE FROM THE BARREL: LOCAL FLAVOUR, SERVED FROM THE BARREL

At THB hotels, we select Mallorcan wines and serve them directly from traditional barrels. This lets us serve wine without using individual bottles each time, reducing the need for some of the associated packaging. By choosing local wines, we offer guests products connected to the area and a chance to discover the flavours of the islands.

Smart waste weighing

We smart-weigh all the waste we generate using scales equipped with a technological system that provides real-time data on waste fractions that allow us to monitor and analyse our waste production in detail. In turn, this enables us to introduce effective actions to reduce waste generation.

PRODUCE FROM THE BALEARIC ISLANDS

At THB hotels, we champion local flavours, serving products made in the Balearic Islands such as sobrasada sausage, ensaimada pastries and other traditional specialities. This initiative supports local producers, reduces transport-related emissions, and allows our guests to enjoy an authentic gastronomic experience that is closely connected to the culture and environment of our islands.
