At THB hotels we believe that fighting climate change is a task for us all, which is why we are working together with our employees, partners, suppliers and customers on cutting our carbon emissions at each stage of our guests’ stay.

    What is the circular economy?

The circular economy is an approach to production and consumption aimed at eliminating the throwaway mentality. Its main purpose is to minimize waste generation, which requires the complete transformation of our current system of production and consumption. This involves adopting practices such as exchanging, renting, reusing, repairing, renewing and recycling existing materials and products as far as it is feasibly possible.

    More sustainable hotels

In 2023 we have drawn up three-year circularity plans for all our hotels in the Balearic Islands. These plans are assessed annually in order to review objectives and actions.

The implementation of these circularity plans is based on three key principles: the efficient administration of the resources available, which includes aspects such as investment, innovation and decision-making; the updating of internal procedures and the way materials and resources are used; and the participation of our major stakeholders, including employees, suppliers and customers.

The sustainable consumption of water, electricity and materials, reducing our carbon footprints and the amount of waste we generate, the importance of recycling and reusing, raising the awareness of workers and customers and the commitment of our suppliers, effective communication and the correct design of eco-friendly actions are all issues which, through the various goals and actions, are included in the circularity plans designed to reduce our impact and consolidate our position as a company that is committed to circularity.

Our actions in the field of circularity

Fewer emissions and the use of renewable energies.  Our goal is to minimise the emissions we generate, thereby contribute to slowing down climate change. How do we do this? By installing solar panels in all our hotels and corporate offices to generate directly part of the electricity required. We have also cut our energy consumption by introducing efficient technologies that have significantly reduced the amount of energy we need.

Reduced waste and the elimination of single-use plastics. We have cut down our use of plastic packaging and eliminated single-use plastics through actions such as swapping capsule coffee machines for more traditional loose coffee beans or condiment sachets or amenities for dispensers. Small actions that have enabled us to cut down the amount of waste generated by many tons.

Talking of waste, we must also highlight actions such as vegetable oil management: starting this year, waste from this product will be used to produce biodiesel. Strict controls will also be carried out on the amount of waste generated, ensuring it is correctly separated and weighed in order to guarantee that we are indeed cutting down on waste.

We know that in order to reduce the amount of waste we generate, one of the key actions is to extend the useful life of the products and materials we use. In this sense, we consistently donate all types of materials, from PCs and tablets to items for the home such as towels and sheets.

Efficient use of supplies. Our attention is not only focused on where our supplies are sourced, but also on using them in a responsible manner. Reducing electricity and water consumption at all our properties is another of the goals we pursue in our circular economy plans. To achieve this, we deliver ongoing training for employees and drive communication actions that target all our customers, encouraging them to save water and energy.

Local suppliers and locally sourced products. We also pay special attention to sourcing products and services from local suppliers, both for our hotels and our corporate offices. What’s more, in the restaurants at our hotels, guests can enjoy and savour the finest local gastronomy made from responsibly produced and locally sourced ingredients.

    Awareness.
Ensuring that all our employees, customers, suppliers and partners are informed of our actions in the field of circularity is a maximum priority. We therefore deliver training to our employees, which includes both practical workshops and theory sessions. We also keep our customers, suppliers and partners up-to-date with all the actions carried out as part of our circularity plans.

For several years now, THB hotels has operated under the ECO friendly brand in order to reduce our impact on the environment. From now on, our list of objectives includes all those actions and plans related to circularity, because our ultimate goal is none other than to be a company that respects people and the environment.

These are just a few of the actions we’re carrying out at THB hotels. Join us in our commitment to the environment!
