At THB hotels, we are committed to responsible and sustainable tourism. Measuring, reducing and offsetting our carbon footprint is a key priority within our environmental strategy.
We recently obtained Carbon Footprint certificates for 2023, which have been officially recorded at the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge in Spain. These certificates show the CO2 emissions produced by our hotels over the past year, a figure that we are constantly working to reduce, and they also enable us to set new goals as we work further towards becoming carbon neutral in the future.
Three hotels certified as “carbon neutral”
As part of this commitment, we’ve gone a step further: the THB Bamboo Alcudia, THB Felip and THB Gran Playa hotels – all located in Mallorca – have been certified as “carbon neutral” by the Ministry for Ecological Transition. These three establishments have received the full “Calculate + Reduce + Offset” seal, meaning that 100% of the emissions generated in 2023 have been offset through certified CO₂ absorption projects.
This achievement is the result of a process built on three pillars: calculating, reducing and offsetting. First, we accurately measured the emissions generated by our operations (including fuel consumption, refrigerant leaks and electricity use). We then implemented measures to reduce our impact, such as installing solar panels, upgrading air-conditioning systems and replacing diesel boilers with more environmentally friendly natural gas alternatives. Thanks to these actions, we’ve reduced our total emissions by 19% compared to 2017 – despite now operating more hotels.
Reinvesting in sustainability: offsetting our carbon footprintFor two years now, at THB hotels we have been investing the income we make from recycling cooking oil into sustainable projects. As part of this initiative, all funds raised have been invested in offsetting the carbon footprint of our hotels. Our emissions are offset through the A Granda – A Fonsagrada project, a reforestation program in Galicia that is supported by the Ministry of the Environment in Spain. This project enables us to actively contribute towards the environment by planting trees, thus helping to mitigate the impact of our CO2 emissions. One more step towards a greener future
At THB hotels, we remain committed to advancing towards a more sustainable tourism model. Since 2017, we’ve been calculating and registering our carbon footprint with the Ministry for Ecological Transition, and since 2021 we’ve been verifying our scope 1 and 2 emissions in accordance with the international GHG Protocol standard.
As a result of this commitment, we’ve achieved a 36% reduction in emissions per stay since 2017, consolidating our position as a sustainability leader within the hotel sector. Our goal is clear: to increase the number of carbon-neutral hotels in the coming years by further enhancing our energy-efficiency and offsetting measures.
At THB hotels we will continue striving to reduce the emissions generated from all of our hotels and to work towards eventual carbon neutrality. We are also evaluating all the initiatives and projects that enable us to continue contributing towards a greener planet. With each step we take, we reaffirm our commitment to build a more sustainable future for the next generations, working to achieve a tourism model that both respects and protects the environment.
